4 Ways to Get Your Motivation Back!

4 Ways to Get Your Motivation Back! Sometimes I get distracted. Some days that's okay because I know that's my mind telling me, "you need a break". However, when days turn into weeks of not making any progress on ongoing projects or assignments, that's when I know I need to find my motivation. Below, I have complied 4 ways to get your motivation back! Continue reading to find out what they are.  01 Make an attainable plan! This could include making a list of feats that you want to accomplish each day or creating a broader monthly schedule that keeps you on track to attaining your goals. Having a game plan will ensure that you keep a sharp focus on your goals and provide a road map on how to get there.   02 Create deadlines! If I...

Stop and Smell the Aspen!

When reflecting upon this summer, I once again did a classic Ava move. If you are unfamiliar with this, let me paint you a picture that I think you will be able to relate to. During periods of time where I have multiple projects, activities and goals in play, I tend to get hyper focused on partaking in actions that will push the needle further towards reaching my goals. However, one of my greatest faults is not knowing when to close my laptop or set down my project to go to a beach on a beautiful summer day or to join my family for a hike.    By being so engrossed in my work, I find I miss out on the activities that make life, well, life! This realization came into full view this past week when I was forced to de-plug by going on an incredible trip with my boyfriend’s f...

An Open Letter To My Brothers: Thank You For Letting Me Be A Big Sister

Thank you for letting me be a big sister Growing up, my siblings and I were constantly busy. From running to sports practices, to community service clubs, to study groups, we were always two ships passing in the night. Don’t get me wrong, it was so awesome to be in such a motivating and inspiring environment where all of us drew strength from one another. However, even though I kept up to date on what my brothers were doing, I never felt like I knew how they were doing.  Then March of 2020 hit and I was given a second chance to reconnect with them. Being home and not having any of the distractions that usually plagued our lives, I was finally able to build a relationship with both of them. From what started as just popping into one another's rooms to talk about a funny thi...

Why Everyone Needs To Start Manifesting Their Future

The other day I stumbled upon my high school brother in the kitchen as he was talking to himself, you know, just Burford things. While he was taking a break from his studies, he kept repeating to himself that he was going to be “successful, strong and have the ability to make a change in the world”. When I asked him why he was saying this, he told me that whenever he gets frustrated with his classes, he manifests his future.  I thought this was incredibly interesting. Thinking back to times where I really wanted something, I remembered that my dad would always tell me “picture yourself having that thing and how happy you will feel once you get it”. This image has always stuck with me from picturing myself acing exams to getting into my dream school to then making it a reali...

What No One Tells You About Moving Back Home

What No One Tells You About Moving Back Home Raise your hand if this past year you had to move back home unexpectedly? My hand is raised too and yes, I am still living here. This past year has been unique for many different reasons. With the world slowly opening up, I found myself reflecting upon what no one tells you about moving back home.  As a twenty year old, I have always looked to my parents for guidance in whatever endeavors I am embarking upon. With being away for a year and then coming back, our relationship dynamic has shifted for the better. When coming home, my parents initially parented me, which is understandable given the world circumstances we were facing. However, the longer I have been here, I feel that my parents have seen me mature and grow intelle...

The Importance of Living in the Spectacular Now

The Importance of Living in the Spectacular Now I want to start this post by asking you to reflect on a couple questions: how many times this past year did you say to yourself “when Covid-19 is over, I will finally be able to do this”. For me, I must have said this sentence hundreds if not thousands of times but let’s take a step back. How many times have you said, prior to the pandemic, “when this event is over, I will finally be able to do this”.  Whether this event is homework, focusing on your physical health, meeting with friends, traveling, or whatever it may be, we need to stop allowing ourselves to miss out on the spectacular moments life encompasses. Granted, there are times that you need to buckle down but we must learn to set boundaries with these externalities or...

Why I Am So Grateful To Have A Job

"My love for working didn’t quite start until I began hosting and serving at a five star resort in my hometown" How it all Started... It all started when I was working at a tee-shirt shop the summer before my junior year of high school. I was so excited to get to work every morning and open the store to start folding! What fun right? For me, it was incredible. Being responsible for a BUILDING that I could call MY own was the most responsibility I had ever been given. I took pride in my salesmanship, relationship with customers and responsibility to make the store as welcoming as possible. My love for working didn’t quite start until I began hosting and serving at a five star resort in my hometown. I was the youngest employee hired in one of th...

An Open Letter to My Family: Thank You For Supporting Me At Home

I did not expect to move home so suddenly after leaving for my dream school...    Last September, as I drove down to Los Angeles with my parents, hauling almost everything I owned with me, I never would have thought that seven months later I would be doing the same trip back home. This time however, instead of wearing my new UCLA hoodie I would be wearing a face mask, gloves, and having to change my clothes before I entered my front door. Moving back home was never a part of the larger “plan” that I had imagined for myself when I started college. That being said, over the past seven months I am so grateful that I have been able to come home and receive much needed support during this time. I’ve learned that sometimes things don’t work out the way you had intende...

Respect Yourself and Others!

Respect Yourself and Others! This past year has not been an easy ride for anyone. However, no matter what is happening in your life or in the world, that can not act as an excuse to be disrespectful to someone that comes into your life. Rather than tearing down those around us, we need to ready ourselves with the right tools on how to address our feelings while being respectful to others. What does respect mean you may ask? My definition is to have admiration for someone’s actions and regard for their personal beliefs, traditions and circumstances. We MUST be able to respect ourselves AND show respect towards others. Everything starts with you. How you internally talk to yourself and how you treat others should follow along the lines of that definition.  ...

Empowerment Series: Jeannie Burford

Jeannie Burford I am so lucky to be able to say that Jeannie Burford is my mom. My whole life she has been my biggest cheerleader. She is someone that I can, without a doubt, look to in order to feel like I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. Not only is she a Senior Financial Advisor in her office, but she is one of the founding members of Boys Team Charity in Santa Barbara.  On top of all of this, she is ALWAYS there for any one of my siblings or I, avidly bikes, hikes, walks, enjoys traveling, making flower arrangements, baking, and offers advice to graduating college students who are interested in going into financial careers. She is truly the most inspiring person I know. My whole life I witnessed my mom waking up at 5am....
