What I Have Learned Working In A Small Business Run By Women

What I Have Learned Working In A Small Business Run By Women... For the past six months, I have been working at a boutique that is run by two incredible women. Each day I come to work, my perception is broadened as to how important community is when building a business. Seeing the connection and love others have for the store is amazing! I have also learned that every opportunity can be presented by taking a different path. There is definitely not one way to do something. For instance, I know this may sound silly, but my whole life I have been ingrained that I needed to go to college in order to start my career. However, that is not the case for many professions. There are successful paths that do not need another degree while there are other professions that need additional ...

Why I Have Always Loved Valentine’s Day (Even When I’m Single)

Why I Have Always Loved Valentine's Day (Even When I'm Single) Ah, Valentine’s Day. I have always adored this holiday. For some, it’s one of the most dreaded days of the year, but I have never understood why even when I am single. I believe this holiday rests on the cusp of the best season of the year. The days are getting a little longer, it may even start to be getting a little warmer and it usually falls on a three day weekend. On top of all of this, it’s a day that emphasizes the importance of love and appreciation, which comes in so many different forms, not just between two significant others.     I credit my love for this holiday to my mom. She made us feel incredibly special every year. We would wake up to little gift baskets filled with our favorite candy...

How To Stop Basing Your Values In Other’s Opinions

How To Stop Basing Your Values In Other’s Opinions Peer and societal pressures are real... Now, I’m not referencing experiences such as your grandma trying to pawn off some of her chocolate chip cookies to you, I’m referencing ways you alter your personality, mediums of expression and overall beliefs of the world around you to please those in your inner circle. We are all unique individuals. Why should we be forced to morph with the pack to feel more stable when we are all destined to push the boundaries and take risks? I can’t say I have always strayed away from following others. In high school, I found I was constantly altering the words that came out of my mouth or the way I dressed because I was afraid that others would think. This then transformed to me loosing sight of who ...

How To Make A Long Distance Relationship Work For You

How to Make A Long Distance Relationship Work For You Okay... I get it. The phrase “long-distance” is one that holds many negative stereotypes when it comes to relationships. It's scary, I know. Time away from your significant other can be really challenging. However, it’s not all infrequent phone calls and tissue boxes. When you are forced to spend time away from your partner, you are granted a period to really reflect upon the value that your relationship adds to your life. While you are away from one another, you have ample time to talk and continue to learn more about one another than you would have when relaxing and watching Netflix. You are even granted more time to fully involve yourself in your interests and passions. Even though this all may sound great, it only is if yo...

Why Pivoting Your Life’s Goals Is So Important

Why Pivoting Your Life’s Goals Is So Important As a second year student in college, I have lived my life according to my penciled-in-plan in my planner. Ever since the beginning of high school, I have mapped out my weeks, months, even years, to when something should happen and the steps I will take to get there.  “How do you stay so on top of everything?” is a question I get asked asked often. To the outsider, it may seem that I have “everything figured out”. Well, as I sit here, writing this article, let me tell you, I don’t. Since starting college, I have been introduced to a completely new environment that encompasses so many people, ideas and opportunities that it has transformed my preconceived notion of my future.  By talking to other individuals and putting my...

How My Passion Has Shaped Me Into Who I Am

Let's Talk About Singing... Welcome to 2021 everyone!!! Ah we made it! To start the new year, I wanted to talk about something that makes me shine. Singing has been a big part of my life ever since I was little. It has allowed me to convey my creativity to the world. I discovered this passion of mine in the middle of my fourth grade musical, a child-friendly rendition of Mamma Mia while I was belting my little lungs out, riding on a wave of pure bliss. Prior to this experience, I was more on the quiet spectrum, getting embarrassed if my sister heard me singing “Eye of the Tiger” in the shower. I always felt truly alive while singing from the first audience of thirty or so parents forced into coming to a play to my largest crowd of two thousand music fans eagerly watching me per...

Why I Am So Grateful To Have A Job

"My love for working didn’t quite start until I began hosting and serving at a five star resort in my hometown" How it all Started... It all started when I was working at a tee-shirt shop the summer before my junior year of high school. I was so excited to get to work every morning and open the store to start folding! What fun right? For me, it was incredible. Being responsible for a BUILDING that I could call MY own was the most responsibility I had ever been given. I took pride in my salesmanship, relationship with customers and responsibility to make the store as welcoming as possible. My love for working didn’t quite start until I began hosting and serving at a five star resort in my hometown. I was the youngest employee hired in one of th...

Going the Distance: Why I Am Thankful For My Long Distance Relationship

How I found myself going the distance...   The summer before I started my freshman year of college I was working full time at one of the most luxurious resorts located on the sands of Montecito, California. All I could think about was saving money for college and my excitement for the fall quarter to begin. That all changed when the pool boy I would see each day pushing towel carts would become my boyfriend. It is now my second year at UCLA and yes, I am still dating that pool boy. Through the past year and a half, a lot has changed in my life. However, even though we have not been in the same town since that summer, I am so grateful that we decided to go the distance.  Moving away from home was scary! A newer and bigger city full of opportunities was as ex...
