The Importance of Living in the Spectacular Now
I want to start this post by asking you to reflect on a couple questions: how many times this past year did you say to yourself “when Covid-19 is over, I will finally be able to do this”. For me, I must have said this sentence hundreds if not thousands of times but let’s take a step back. How many times have you said, prior to the pandemic, “when this event is over, I will finally be able to do this”.
Whether this event is homework, focusing on your physical health, meeting with friends, traveling, or whatever it may be, we need to stop allowing ourselves to miss out on the spectacular moments life encompasses. Granted, there are times that you need to buckle down but we must learn to set boundaries with these externalities or we will become consumed by them.
Over this past year, this has become more prevalent than ever before. Prior to the pandemic, I had the mindset of spending almost all of my time studying and working towards a future I thought I had full control over. This entailed me not going to events or canceling plans with others when I didn’t really need to because I wasn’t behind. In reality, no one has complete control over what their future holds and if you don’t believe me take a hard look at the events that played out in 2020 alone.
When reflecting upon my actions, I remembered a story my great grandpa told me once. He knew a man whose life goal was to travel to Europe. Each year he would push off his trip with his family because the timing wasn’t right or he had to work or for another excuse. After 40 years of doing this, this man unexpectedly passed away without being able to fulfill his dreams.
Life can take us in some unexpected directions at times. That is why we must learn to live in the spectacular now and utilize each day to make time for things we love. With spring approaching and the world opening up, this is a time of new beginnings. I encourage you to refresh your current routine with activities that bring you joy. Even if it’s just for 10 minutes, give yourself that time you otherwise wouldn’t have. By enjoying the present, you will be establishing a more fulfilling life now and for the future. So go out there and bake that recipe you have been putting off, pick up that book you set down 6 months ago, take that trip you had to push off and enjoy your life!
