What No One Tells You About Living In Montecito, California
Looking back to a year ago, time felt like it couldn’t move any slower…now here we are in 2021. As the world went to, excuse my french, utter shit, last March, I found myself packing up my Keurig and other college dorm room necessities to move back home. I know I have touched upon this process of relocating and moving my life around but I have never really shared where I am from. Get ready, it’s story time…
Located in between the beautiful San Ynez mountains and the sunny coastal beaches, I live in the small town known as Montecito. When I was little, I took for granted of the affluence surrounding me. The superb dining options and the world class boutiques that are located on Coast Village are just one sparkle that makes up this shining community. When we first moved here, celebrities such as Jeff Bridges and Drew Barrymore were close neighbors. As any young ten year old who, like other ten year olds, fell in love with men 50 years older than them, I professed my fandom in a heartfelt letter and proudly marched up the street to put it in Jeff Bridges’s mailbox. When I didn’t hear back, around two weeks later, I marched up there to demand answers only to see the mailbox had been changed to a padlocked version.
As time has gone by, I have always gone by the latte prices to evaluate the current state of the housing market. With every dollar increase, the standard house price and celebrity percentage in my area has gone up by 5-10%! Haha just kidding, but man oh man, I find myself having to avoid these newcomers who don’t know that the typical driving speed is 20mph! Just the other day as I was running, looking adorably sweaty and the color of red that is only captured in cartoons, out of nowhere Prince Harry comes speeding up the street almost running me down! You never know what you’re going to have in-store when you leave your house.
I am so fortunate to not only be from such an amazing and resilient community, but I could not have asked for a better place to people watch. Having worked in Montecito my whole life in sales, the service industry and other little jobs, the characters you meet and the stories you hear are unmatchable. Everyone’s a little gossip and I pride myself on being one of the individuals most in the know.
Aside from the spectacular gossip, it’s just so exciting to be able to say I am from such an amazing town filled with an abundance of beauty. Being able to hike, go to the beach and have the best Italian food (shout out to Via Vai, I love you deeply) all in the same day is seriously a dream come true! The people here are the kindest individuals who all have such interesting stories! The depth and strength of my little town is something I am so proud to have come from. If you’re looking for a day trip or weekender, I highly recommend making the drive and staying here. You won’t regret it! Maybe you too can have a near death experience with Prince Harry!
